Uuma fi Uumamtoota: Muthoni Ni Mimi

Words by Seise Baĝbo

To commemorate Pride Month 2024, Sanaa kwa Sana and The Bambis collaborate on Uuma fi Uumamtoota, a project that spotlights and celebrates queer and trans artists in Kenya. Uuma fi Uumamtoota is Afaan Oromo for “creator and creation.”

Today’s artist is Muthoni Ni Mimi.

Muthoni Ni Mimi (they/them) is a multifaceted artist and activist creating as a performing, recording, and visual artist. They are a singer/songwriter, poet, craftsperson, scriptwriter, photographer, and producer. They incorporate their art and psychology background to create art that will help their audience in the healing process through their own mental health journey and expression.

They co-founded The Hippy Circle, a collaborative community of artists with whom they released their debut EP, Subira, in March 2022. It is their dream to create art and artistic spaces in which all artists, particularly queer folk, feel safe, heard, cared for, and seen; where we feel free to be, to heal.

In March 2023, Muthoni self-produced their experimental soundscape work, Ciana Cia Mumbi. In their four years as an arts practitioner, they’ve created immersive sonic experiences that prompt introspection within the audience and the artist; a collective journey of knowing self.
